A sizeable majority of stocks and shares Isa investors intend to place most of their allowance into risk-based investments for the next year, new research has found.

Despite the ongoing uncertainty surrounding the global markets, studies carried out by Barclays Stockbrokers found that two-thirds of investors have opened an allowance for this tax year, with 45 per cent of these having already invested the full £7,200 allowance.

Equities remain the most popular choice of investment, while 41 per cent of those polled admitted to being slightly more cautious with their money now than compared to previous years.

Announcing the findings, Barbara-Ann King, head of investments at Barclays Stockbrokers, stated: "While the ongoing market volatility of recent months has clearly taken its toll on investor confidence, our research shows that there's still a place for equities in investors' portfolios and the overwhelming majority of our customers continue to see value and opportunity in the markets into the next tax year."

Just recently, Prudential reported that as many as two million Britons are likely to put off their retirement this year as a direct result of the global economic downturn.ADNFCR-1548-ID-19081924-ADNFCR
