Women 'need pensions'

Pensions

A personal pension has been described as a "vital" strategy for women to help safeguard their financial futures.

Ruth Whitehead, principal adviser for independent advisory Ruth Whitehead Associates, said many women fail to make any personal pension plans and provisions.

"They still, even in the 21st century, sacrifice their own futures because they're concentrating on the needs of others," Ms Whitehead commented.

Another way in which women could manage their finances in order to avoid debt in later life is through investment vehicles such as Isas.

The adviser said: "Year on year, if you keep plugging away at Isas, you'll be very pleased."

Her final suggestion is to buy investment property, adding that if these three steps are followed, people will be fine financially when they reach retirement age.

Earlier this month, the Department for Work and Pensions announced an initiative that will allow women to buy back any gaps in their National Insurance contributions that occurred between 1996 and 2002.
