Turkey could become power hub

Turkey

Turkey is looking to gain from the recent energy fall-out by becoming a major player in Europe's power supply chain.

The country is hoping to establish itself as a major energy corridor and has been in talks with European Commission President Manuel Barroso to help move things a step further.

With the country vying for a place in the European Union, becoming responsible for the continent's energy supplies would push it further towards acceptance - a move that would be beneficial for property investors as property values would likely increase as a result.

Anakara-based energy analyst Haluk Direskeneli explained that the potential deal could be a huge coup for the country.

"All of this is a very good opportunity for Turkey, because of the country's geography and in the end this is all about geography," he said.

"We are at the centre between suppliers and consumers, but it depends on how Turkey deals with the power games."

Turkey is already a hugely popular tourism destination with coastlines meeting the Mediterranean, Aegean and Black seas and borders with eight countries.

Temperatures can range from well below freezing in the eastern mountains to above 30 degrees Celsius in other parts of the country during summer.
